Our History
Six Santa Cruz physicians who felt that physicians working together as Partners could provide better service for their patients founded the Santa Cruz Medical Clinic in 1953. Drs. Allegrini, Dybdahl, Jacobson, Johns, Naman and Roach opened Santa Cruz's first multi-specialty medical group on the Westside of Santa Cruz.
By 1965 the group had grown to include twelve physicians. Ten years later, in 1975, there were 24 physicians supporting the medical needs of the Santa Cruz County. The clinic had clearly out grown its original location, so in 1978 Santa Cruz Medical Clinic announced that it was leaving the Westside and moving to a location equidistant from the two local hospitals. By the time the clinic opened its doors on Soquel Avenue in 1980, the clinic had expanded to 31 physicians.
The main office on Soquel was built to comfortably support 36 physicians. However, as the Santa Cruz County population soared, so did the demand for the type of high quality medical care provided by the Santa Cruz Medical Clinic physicians.
The clinic continued its path of innovation by opening an Urgent Care department in 1984. In 1987, the Santa Cruz Medical Clinic opened its first satellite facility in Scotts Valley, housing Family Practitioners, and Urgent Care services. In 1988, a second satellite was opened in Aptos where Family Practitioners are servicing patients in our mid county area. In 1990, Physical Therapy relocated to an off-site facility in order to expand their services and provide Aqua Therapy.
A third satellite to provide care to our patients on the west side of town was completed in 1992. Specialty offices for surgery, urology, and OB/GYN were opened in 1993. In 1994, the Clinic opened a Family Practice and Urgent Care facility in Watsonville, a city south of Santa Cruz. In the fall of 2000 we opened a Downtown office and in 2001 we relocated our Scotts Valley satellite to a larger office building, which can accommodate additional Family Practitioners and a Pediatric practice to better meet the expanding needs of community.
In 1995, we became a Sutter Health affiliate. VNA of Santa Cruz and Mid-Coast VNA also affiliated under the same senior management structure. Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center, another Sutter Health affiliate, opened its doors in 1996 as an acute care hospital.
